After four years at the University of Florida (B.S. Journalism/editorial sequence), four years at the Tampa Tribune (editor/reporter) and 24 years at the Miami Herald (editor/associate publisher/VP advertising/VP circulation), Mobley became publisher of the Daily Business Review (Miami-Dade/Broward/Palm Beach) and president of ALM Media’s Florida Division in October 2000. In February 2008, he was named group publisher, adding oversight of the Daily Report in Atlanta and Texas Lawyer in Dallas. He left ALM in May of this year.
The DBR today is a more focused (law/real estate) media company and a more credible, prize-winning newspaper (Florida Bar Excellence in Reporting, the National Press Club Freedom of the Press Award and others), with a robust website.
Mobley served American Court & Commercial Newspapers for 13 years, six as president. ACCN, with 60 members across the nation, is dedicated to preserving the public’s right to know. Today he serves on the board of the national Public Notice Resource Center, an entity he helped develop in 2002.
Mobley was the first publisher to serve on the Associated Industries of Florida board and has served on the board for 7+ years.
Arguably the state’s most powerful business lobby, Mobley worked successfully to promote the newspaper industry’s position on public notice publication by an independent third party. He served on the board of directors of the Florida Press Association and has served as its Treasurer and Vice Chair.
Mobley and his wife Vicki are strong supporters of the University of Florida and he served six years on the College of Journalism & Communication’s Journalism Advisory Council, and chaired the council in 2013-14. The Mobleys are founding donors to the Center for Media Innovation and Research and during his time on the council, the college developed curriculum and built the Innovation News Center to make graduates more game-ready for today’s media world.
The Mobleys, married 45 years, have three grown children and three grandchildren.
