Membership Benefits

Free Legal Consultation

Receive fast, accurate answers to any legal questions a publication may encounter – from copyright and defamation, to postal matters and state regulations — by calling the FPA legal hotline. With the support of the elite media law team of Thomas & LoCicero, General Counsel Sam Morley is available strictly to members in good standing to answer important legal questions. Keep on top of topical issues with Sam’s selection of hotline questions and answers in the bi-weekly e-Bulletin. On critical legal questions affecting wide segments of the industry, FPA regularly enters cases as a friend of the court.

Legislative Monitoring

FPA maintains year-round monitoring on the Florida Legislature and its committees, including comprehensive bill analysis. Reports are provided to all FPA members during each legislative session, and special legislative reports and alerts are provided as necessary. To support its legislative efforts, FPA retains the services of Holland & Knight’s state-wide legislative team.

Annual Rebate via Reach Florida

By participating in the Classified and/or Display advertising networks, your newspaper can earn annual rebates. These networks are a benefit to all FPA members in good standing and provides revenue that can offset the cost of membership. Additionally, your newspaper can sell into the Reach Florida network and earn extra income.

Weekly and Creative Excellence Contests

Reward your creative teams and showcase their excellent work! Members from weekly newspapers have an option to enter annual contests in over 40 categories. Experienced professionals judge the contests, and provide written critiques that can help you improve your publication. Daily newspapers may enter the contest conducted by the Florida Society of Newspaper Editors (FSNE). Awards for the contests are presented each year at the annual convention. Annual Convention

The Florida Media Conference serves as the premier opportunity for Florida’s news media leaders to meet, share ideas and create partnerships. This summertime symposium offers knowledgeable speakers and motivating presentations with information designed to improve our member newspapers. Additionally, this is an opportunity to interact with the members of the other participating organizations and share best practices. Participants include the Florida Press Association (FPA), Intersect Media, Florida Society of News Editors (FSNE), Florida Newspaper Advertising and Marketing Executives (FNAME), Florida Magazine Association (FMA), and the program is hosted by the Florida Press Foundation. Paid Internship Program

The Florida Press Foundation provides funding to FPA members for its summer intern program. An eight-week paid internship can be implemented for any phase of newspaper production, including advertising, editorial, circulation and digital. The program applies to Florida resident students attending Florida colleges and universities. This is an exciting opportunity to provide students with real newspaper experience to complement their academic preparation, and many of the participating members have hired their interns after graduation.

Leadership Training

The Derek Dunn-Rankin Leadership Institute, presented by the Florida Press Foundation, seeks to enhance the leadership skills of newly identified up-and-coming mid-level newspaper professionals. The training occurs over four, one-day sessions throughout Florida and provides participants with an overview of the newspaper industry in Florida and how to become more effective managers and leaders.
