Flood Risk America Installs Custom Flood Protection System at Shriners Children’s Hospital Tampa

Shriners Children’s Hospital Tampa has completed a new flood protection installation aimed at safeguarding the facility from increasing flood risk along Florida’s Gulf Coast. The project was carried out by Flood Risk America (FRA), a company specializing in customized flood protection systems for critical infrastructure.

Located near the coast, the hospital faces heightened exposure to storm surge and heavy rainfall. The newly installed flood protection system helps shield areas of the facility that are particularly vulnerable to water intrusion, including parking garage entrances, elevator access points, and primary building entryways.

Shriners Children’s Hospital Tampa is part of a world-renowned nonprofit healthcare system that provides specialized pediatric care for children with orthopedic conditions, burn injuries, spinal cord injuries, cleft lip and palate, and other complex medical needs, regardless of a family’s ability to pay.

“Medical facilities must remain accessible and operational at all times,” said Stephen Gill, founder and managing partner of Flood Risk America. “Ensuring hospitals have reliable flood protection in place helps prevent disruptions to patient care during storms and flooding.”

Growing Flood Risks for Healthcare Facilities

As climate-driven weather events become more frequent and intense, flooding is a growing reality for coastal and low-lying regions across the United States, including Tampa Bay. Rising sea levels, heavier rainfall, and more powerful storms are placing strain on essential buildings such as hospitals, power facilities, municipal infrastructure, and emergency service hubs.

Even minor flood events can lead to major disruptions and create long-term recovery challenges for communities that depend on these facilities most during times of crisis. As flood risks continue to increase, proactive planning and targeted flood protection help protect our communities.

Protecting Critical Access Points

To address these challenges, Flood Risk America installed its patented, customized FRA Flood Panel system at the hospital. The system is designed for rapid deployment and watertight protection without permanent structural modifications.

Areas protected include:

  • Parking garage entrances and ramps, helping prevent floodwater from entering parking and electrical areas
  • Elevator access points, reducing the risk of costly damage and prolonged downtime
  • Main entryways and exterior doors, blocking water at key access locations

Each installation was tailored to fit the hospital’s layout while maintaining accessibility and safety standards.
