Bannon Island: A Hidden Old Florida Treasure Reborn Through Masterful Design

Five generations later on Central Florida’s Bannon Island, heritage meets the horizon. A master renovation of the historic home, along with a magnificent addition by famous architect William H. Philips from Southern Living, now crowns Bannon Island with a L’Orangerie as its piece de resistance.

Discover how Irish immigrant carpenter Patrick Bannon pioneered his private island in Lake Marion in the late 1890s. Recount the stories of Bannon children encountering bobcats and alligators while farming the 28-acre island before dawn, as their father battled food poisoning while constructing the historic octagonal home that still stands today.

The story echoes the same spirit, heart, and grit of Patrick Smith’s A Land Remembered.

Find out how a nun, an artist, a physician, and a contractor from later generations have carried on the legacy of this wild, hidden piece of old Florida.

The owners are seeking an opportunity to share their story and showcase Bannon Island’s magnificent renovation and addition by the famous architect William H. Philips from Southern Living.
