The Gadsden County Times is seeking an Editor with the ability to write news stories, design and layout news pages and develop strong internal and external relationships The Editor is responsible for the overall photography, writing, editing and layout of the weekly newspaper. The Editor must set the agenda for community news coverage by deciding what the reporting priorities should be. The newspaper must carry hard news, local features, local sports, and social/lifestyle news relevant to the community. This full-time position is exempt and reports to the General Manager. The work schedule is typically Mon-Fri, 8AM-5PM.

The Gadsden County Times is a weekly newspaper with an average circulation of 2900. Gadsden County is located in the panhandle of Florida with a population of approximately 46,389. Its county seat is Quincy. Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism
  • 3 – 5 years editing and management experience
  • Strong communication skills are a must to relate information, relay instructions to others and discuss problems on a timely basis
  • Strong time management skills
  • Adaptable
  • Strong initiative
  • Ability to juggle multiple assignments
  • Strong news judgment, and time/organizational skills
  • Must be proficient in layout and design using InDesign
  • Perform daily functions with a minimal amount of direction

Essential Functions

  • Weekly page design and layout of the entire newspaper
  • Write accurate, compelling and balanced stories on deadline
  • Cover local events, meetings and other activities, as well as write feature stories
  • Managing reporters and correspondents
  • Develop beat sources within the community and gain a thorough knowledge and understanding of community issues
  • Develop a network of volunteer correspondents and student writers
