Copy Editor

Copy Editor

LOCATION: Washington, DC or California
STATUS: Full-time
PROGRAM AREA: Kaiser Health News

About the Job:

The Kaiser Family Foundation (KFF), the nonprofit health policy analysis, polling and journalism organization, is seeking a Copy Editor to join the staff of Kaiser Health News (KHN), the national newsroom producing and distributing in-depth journalism about health issues across the country. KHN has a vibrant and ambitious staff based in Washington, DC, California, Missouri, Colorado, Montana and now the Southern states. We are an expanding newsroom of more than 60 highly productive journalists.

The ideal Copy Editor will work collaboratively with KHN reporters and editors maintaining quality, applying outstanding knowledge of grammar, punctuation and English usage, and following both Associated Press and in-house style. The editor should excel at finding elegant wording solutions to occasionally wonkish prose, crafting engaging headlines, fact-checking, Googling, participating in “style summits” and mastering SEO. They will track stories from Word docs or Google Docs and upload them into WordPress for publication, tending to SEO and display type.

KHN covers an incredibly broad number of topics, so we aren’t looking for an expert in health care policy, politics or business. We are looking for a confident person who is not afraid to challenge editors and reporters about wording, facts, and even the general thrust of articles. But KHN has a lovely work environment, so we want someone who has a pleasant bedside manner as they work to improve copy. We need someone with word skills, but also organizational skills to keep the copy flow moving.

The qualified candidate will be working with top-notch reporters and editors and will report to an experienced copy chief, for whom they would occasionally fill in.

We are flexible about the location, though Washington, DC, or the West Coast are the two most logical locations. We’d prefer the copy editor work 1-9 p.m. ET. We offer a competitive salary commensurate with experience and qualifications, and we have enviable health insurance and retirement benefits. We want someone who wants to be part of an ambitious and fast-growing newsroom. Tell us why you want to work at this great organization and why no one else could do this job better than you could. We’re excited to hear from you.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience with at least five years of relevant copy-editing experience, ideally including at least one year working in an online publishing environment.
  • Outstanding knowledge of language, grammar and usage.
  • An eye for detail and accuracy.
  • Math skills are always a plus.
  • Knowledge of Word and WordPress essential.
  • An ability to organize, prioritize and maintain high-quality work amid competing deadlines, and to take initiative and solve problems.
  • Broad knowledge of, or passionate interest in, subjects covered by KHN, particularly health care and science.
  • Appreciation of good writing.
  • Reasonable sense of humor.
