The News-Leader, Florida’s oldest weekly newspaper, located in historic Fernandina Beach, Florida, on the north end of Amelia Island seeks an experienced and committed Editor to lead its news department of four reporters. Candidate needs to be energetic and people oriented with a passion for local community journalism. Candidate must also possess strong news judgment and understanding of the use of print and digital platforms to grow readership. This position reports directly to the Publisher and must be able to work with the entire newspaper team in achieving the goals of the business.

The position determines news goals, best use of resources, establishes priorities, evaluates staff performance and exercises news judgement to ensure a successful news operation; oversees the day-to-day operations of the news department, including preparation of text, photos, art and editorials for print and digital platforms; editing for style, grammar, accuracy, libel protection and follow legal and ethical policies and standards of professionalism; page layout and design; assists in the development and implementation of special projects; communicates with other department heads, reporters, correspondents, news sources and the community.

Candidates must possess a college degree; a minimum of two to three years of experience in managing a news room; computer skills, proficient in InDesign software and digital savvy with website and social media platforms; strong English language and writing skills; the ability to direct a news staff to produce adequate amounts of copy on deadline and strong interpersonal skills, often one-on-one situations involving controversy.

The award-winning News-Leader is an 8,500 paid circulation community newspaper published twice per week on Wednesday and Friday.
