John Schumann, Sr.

Schumann served over 68 years in the newspaper business and he founded and led the Vero Beach Press-Journal from an outstanding weekly to an outstanding daily publication. He was very active in the state and national press associations and the Press-Journal was recognized as a leader in the industry. The newspaper was awarded the John Lockner Trophy in 1938 by the U.F. College of Journalism, which called the paper “one of the pioneer newspapers in the weekly field in Florida.” The Lockner Trophy was awarded to the Press-Journal twice more, in 1941 and 1942. In addition to his newspaper career, Schumann was a leader in the community and contributed much to its growth and development. He was appointed postmaster in 1934 by President Franklin Roosevelt and served for 10 years. He founded WTTB, the first radio station in Indian River County, was a leader in the emerging citrus industry, a member of the Florida Citrus Commission, a founding director of several local banks and a credit union, and a charter member of many service and social organizations.
