News-Journal Editor Pat Rice to retire at year’s end after 12 years at the newsroom’s helm
After nearly 12 years as editor of The Daytona Beach News-Journal, Pat Rice is retiring at year’s end, closing a chapter in an award-winning 38-year journalism career.
“I’ve just decided that I’m at a point in life that if I’m going to do anything else from a career standpoint, it’s the right time for me to do that,” said Rice, 64, who announced the decision to the paper’s newsroom staff earlier this week. “I’ve been the editor here for 12 years; that’s a long run for any editor anywhere and it just feels like the right time to make that move to go into something else.”
Rice offered no details on those future plans, but did emphasize that he and his wife, Joni Hunt, will remain in Volusia County. He added that he plans to stay active in community issues.
“I love this area and I’m not planning on going anywhere,” he said. “I intend to remain involved.”
